One of the biggest challenges in getting started with style is the lack of clear guidelines on what actually looks good.
On top of that, it’s tough to get honest and direct feedback from friends and family about whether your clothing choices really fit together. Either they politely tell you “it looks nice on you”, they might themselves not know how to dress to stand out, they might even honestly think outfits don’t matter that much, or all of the options.
But in dating, we should aim to not just “look nice”. Instead, we should aim to stand out and look above average.
Here I’ll give you a shopping list for a wardrobe based on the fundamental principles that elevates you almost instantly above average in style. Copy it, wear it, get comfortable with it and then get experimenting with the style.
Shopping list
Essentials
Item list
- Slim fit t-shirt in black, white and light gray
- Slim fit jeans in black and light gray
- Black’n’white Old Skool Vans or Converse Chuck Taylor Hi tops
- White tennis shoes such as adidas Stan Smith
- Dress shirt in black (for smart casual events)
These build the base layer of your wardrobe. Just these are often good enough for warm summer weather.
The dress shirt gives you a good outfit for smart casual events, even if it is just replacing your t-shirt with it.
Outerwear
Item list
- Black leather jacket
- Hoodie in black, white, or gray (pick at least 2 out of 3 colors)
- Black wool coat
- Black chelsea boots or combat boots
- Black parka if you live in place where temperatures go below freezing and it’s windy
When it gets colder, you want to have something on top of your base layer and this means layers.
Note for below freezing temperatures. Cold and wind often require clothing that is not as stylish as you’d like and they cover your good looking physique. However, your priority should be to not freeze before looking as stylish as possible. In the winter, you most likely won’t be having dates outside so as long as you look good under your really warm outer layer which you take off when you go inside, you’re good.
Accessories
Item list
- A necklace with a pendant that you find interesting. Buy one with 55-60cm chain, so it’s long enough to not be a collar but also isn’t hanging too low.
- Couple rings. Rings are often bought the easiest from a jewellery store so you can get the right size, or you can measure your fingers and order online.
- A bracelet made of e.g. leather or metal
- A wristwatch – it doesn’t need to be expensive as long as it looks like it’s a proper watch made from metal and such.
Your accessories are what makes your outfits unique. Here are the accessories that please my eye that I’ve collected from some internet stores. None of them are particularly expensive (except the Oura ring), but they look good together.
Showcasing the combinations
Here’s me wearing part of the wardrobe and swapping only individual pieces to make another unique outfit easily. This wardrobe’s benefit is that you can combine basically any of the options with each other and it will look at least decent.
These don’t feel like me in the mirror
You bought the suggestions, and tried them on but it feels… weird. Like it’s fake or just not you.
Well, that’s normal. After all, you might’ve changed your whole wardrobe at the same time, so of course it is going to feel and look weird for a while. If, or rather when, it feels weird, don’t worry. First, wear the new clothes at home and get a bit used to them. Then do groceries or take a walk with them. After a couple days you get used to them and they’ll most likely start feeling more and more normal. Eventually, go do a photoshoot, hangout with friends and have a date wearing them.
Hopefully this list gives you a kickstart in building good looking outfits. Over time you’ll hopefully gain confidence to experiment with other cloth pieces, and learn through trial and error to see what fits together and what doesn’t. At that point, style can become even fun.
